Description

2 Avon Cape Cod Ruby Red Tumblers in good condition as seen in the attached photos. They measure 5.5″ high x 3″ diameter.

Please Note: one of these tumblers has a flea bite along the rim as seen in the last 2 photos. It is where the seam is from the original mold. Please keep this in mind when considering purchase.

This collection was designed by Avon and produced by Wheaton Glass. This collection was first offered in 1975. This would make a great addition to your Avon Cape Cod collection or your red glassware pieces. We have a total of 9 of these pieces available at the time of the listing – there is another listing for 5 wine glasses in our shop.

It is said that this collection was inspired by the Philadelphia Centennial, which was a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and where Sandwich glass originated (also an inspiration for this collection). It was extremely difficult to produce this red glass so different batches could have slightly different color although Avon controlled this and only allowed a slight variation.

AVON’S 1876 CAPE COD RUBY RED GLASS COLLECTION

The Avon 1876 Cape Cod Glass Collection drew its inspiration from the Roman Rosette classical pattern. The number “1876″ comes from the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence being signed, and the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial.

The name “Cape Cod” for the collection is because many of the designs originated from the Boston & Sandwich Glass Works. This company started in 1825 at Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod design is based on an Early American pressed glass known as Sandwich Glass that was inspired by the Roman Rosette pattern designed over 100 years ago in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

This splendid collection of glass is reminiscent of early American pressed glass called “Sandwich”, whose lacy, intricate designs; fine background stippling and sparkling brilliance reflected the superb craftsmanship of its makers.
The Boston & Sandwich Glass Works, founded on Cape Cod in 1825, had produced many of the most elaborate, detailed designs of this quality glass. Other companies in the region competed, but the popularity of “Sandwich” pieces resulted in the name becoming a generic term for pressed glass.

Inspired by the lacy delicacy of these designs, particularly the classic “Roman Rosette” pattern, Avon created this unique collection. Not only does it recall the beauty of this prized American glass, but its name commemorates the spirit of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial which celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, as well as the area where Sandwich glass originated.

IT IS NOW HIGHLY COLLECTABLE AND MUCH SAUGHT AFTER, AS THE PATTERN WAS DISCONTINUED
IN 1993.
